We aim to tell our members about other events of interest, both in the area and online, through our newsletters and emails to the membership.

Here are summaries and links to much of the information we’ve sent out recently, which show what a wide range of activities are often advertised to our members. They’re posted in the order they were issued, so that you may have to scroll down to find events that are still in the future.

Two talks and a conference

  • The British Association of Local History is organising a conference in Sherborne this October titled Rebellion and Protest Across Six Centuries, exploring rebellion, protest and popular resistance from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century.   • Dorset History Centre/ Dorset Archives Trust have two new events planned this month and next:
    • Transported for the Rest of Your Natural Life by Mike Randall, 7pm Thursday 30th April: information and tickets on the Ticket Source site here.
    • Smuggling in Dorset and Hampshire – an evening of music, folklore and local history with Bonny Sartin, 7pm Thursday 21st May: on the Ticket Source site here.

Events in the area and other information

  • Langton Matravers Local History Society have a talk on Thursday 16th April, 7 for 7:30pm, about excavations at the Deserted Medieval Village at Afflington, near Corfe. It’s given by Chris Tripp, who led the dig, with full details on the Society’s site: https://www.langtonia.org/forthcoming-events.html. There’s the possibility of volunteering for the ongoing work next spring.
  • Shaftesbury Abbey’s spring lecture takes place on Thursday 23 April, 7.30pm at Shaftesbury Arts Centre, on ‘Pilgrim Places of Dorset’: author and researcher Dr Nick Mayhew-Smith will be exploring the sacred heritage of Dorset, both natural and built sites – from ancient churches and holy wells to earthworks and sacred trees. Details and booking on Shaftesbury Arts Centre’s website here.
  • Past Participate’s spring newsletter can be found on their website here. It contains news on their ongoing sarsen survey in the Valley of the Stones, with a link to a guided walk leaflet they’ve produced if you want to visit the area. There’s lots of other archaeological/historical information, especially about their work and events, including guided walks and possible volunteering for this year’s excavation 8th- 24th June.

Cranborne Ancient Technology Centre Prehistory Weekend

  • 10am – 4pm Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th March
  • – they’re hosting prehistoric visitors for the weekend: The Ancient Wessex Network, Vicus Iron Age Re-enactment, Here Be Flagons instruments and drumming, Storytelling, Paints and Pigments … with more events and family activities.
  • Hot BBQ food, teas, coffees & cakes for sale.
  • Park in Cranborne Middle School Car Park.
  • £10 adults, £5 children, under 4’s free.

‘Living History’ event at Hengistbury Head

  • This event, from 10am to 3pm Saturday 28th March, will have craft demonstrations and hands-on experiences and activities for all ages, historical/archaeological tours, etc. More details are on their website here.
    Tickets need to be booked on the Eventbrite site here – it seems that they’re selling fast. Prices are on a sliding scale so those who can afford to pay a bit more subsidise those who are less fortunate, relying on people’s honesty.

  • As announced previously, Poole Museum re-opened recently after an extensive redevelopment (with the linked Scaplen’s Court historic house is next door). The redevelopment allowed the Local History Centre to be brought into the heart of the Museum galleries through two new spaces: Discover, where you can explore Poole’s history, and the Research Room “for local and family history research in a quiet space, with experts and resources at your fingertips” (contact points on the BCP Council website).
  • Members were sent the latest Poole Maritime Trust newsletter, with articles relevant to ‘antiquarian interests’ on the Mortar Wreck at Poole Museum, perhaps The Titanic Cat, and lecture meetings towards the end..

Change to EDAS January lecture, lecture at BU & new Dorset Proceedings

  • Bournemouth University have a free lecture in the SHARE lecture theatre on Wednesday 28th January 2026 at 18:30. It’s to launch their new book: The Swash Channel Wreck – An Archaeological Investigation of a 17th-Century Armed Dutch Merchantman, and will be followed by a reception where some of the artefacts from the wreck will be displayed. Booking will be through an Eventbright link in the new year, probably on the University’s Events page.
  • Members were told of the archaeological and historical articles in the latest Dorset Proceedings, volume 146, with an offer to email a copy of the article they’d like to see.
  • And a catch-up to information sent on 14th December, pointing members to the latest newsletter from Past Participate, with information about surveys and excavation work in the Valley of the Stones and around that area. It’s here on their website, which has lots of other information about them and their projects.

A catch-up of a few recent items

  • A new Time Team Special premiered on You Tube on the 8th November about excavations at Cerne Abbas; it’s available by searching You Tube for ‘Time Team’ and ‘Cerne Abbas’.
  • You might be interested to know that the Poole Museum is now fully open again.
  • If you’re a DNHAS individual member you should by now have received the AGM pack. If you’ve not looked through the long document, don’t miss the information and form near the end about obtaining, and paying for, your copy of the Dorset Proceedings.
  • Members were invited to a specially arranged, reduced price, visit to ‘The Newt’ in Somerset next June, particularly to see their faithfully reconstructed Roman villa.

A new TV series and ‘The Hart’ newsletter

  • ‘The Hart’ newsletter from Cranborne Chase National Landscape is here; nothing archaeological but maybe of interest to some people.
  • Sandi Toksvig’s Hidden Wonders starts on More4, Tuesday 4th November at 9pm. The series follows presenter Sandi Toksvig, more than 40 years after earning her degree in Archaeology and Anthropology from Cambridge, to explore remarkable sites with Raksha Dave (President of The Council for British Archaeology). The first episode covers the ‘Big Dig’ excavation at Winterborne Kingston with Dr Miles Russell of Bournemouth University.
  • Members were recently sent a scanned copy of the CBA Wessex periodic archaeology round-up in their Autumn 2025 Wessex News. Sadly, there was nothing from Dorset this time.

Several lectures and fieldwork training

  • There’s a charity lecture by the renowned Julian Richards: ‘Passionate about Pots’ in Verwood, 7:30pm Friday 17th October (Verwood Memorial Hall, Ringwood Road, BH31 7AA). Tickets from Lindsey Dedden at £16 to include a Ploughman’s Supper: lindsey.dedden@gmail.com.
  • Dorset History Centre have announced several lectures in the next couple of months, with details and tickets available at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/dorset-archives-trust/ by adding the text in brackets to this website address: two about the Bankes of Kingston Lacy on 2nd & 4th October (e-ogjxjj & t-ganezxr), one about where people living here from around the world call home on 23rd October (t-dvyrogg), and two on 1st November: ‘Gypsy History in Dorset’ in the afternoon (t-xmpxxpz) and the 18th century ‘Voyage of the Molly’ (e-mqpeyp) in the morning. Some of these are free but all need to be booked.

An EDAS walk and other events

  • A walk for members was announced around Bronze Age and Iron Age monuments near Portesham on 1st October.
  • The Dorchester Association have a day school on Saturday November 1st about Maiden Castle. It is 40 years since the last excavation, and the day will examine what came out of that and also look at more recent work carried out by Bournemouth University and others. Details and booking are on their website, with EDAS members offered the reduced rate applying to their own members.
  • The latest CBA Wessex newsletter is on their website here, covering their conference in Salisbury, a couple of archaeology-related volunteer opportunities and lectures throughout the region.

Late August and September events

  • Dorset History Centre advertised a number of events, with their flyers sent on to members, starting with their ‘From the Stacks’ free lunchtime talk on 27 August about letters from the Thomas Hardy Archives, and through to a family Open Day on 21 September. They don’t seem to have these on the website here (yet?), but you can sign up for their newsletter for more information.
  • Shaftesbury Abbey Museum have their autumn lecture at Shaftesbury Arts Centre at 7pm on Wednesday 24th September. Details are on their website events page:

  • Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire have an ‘ancient schoolroom’ in their Roman villa 27-31 August, with free drop-in lessons for all ages and bookable workshops for both adults and children. See www.butserancientfarm.co.uk/whats-on/calendar

  • The latest Poole Maritime Trust newsletter was circulated to our members as it contained quite a few historical articles of interest to ‘antiquarians’, including two late  17th century special ‘gallantry’ medals.
  • The latest CBA Wessex newsletter is on their website here, with their round-up of events in the region, including some requests for volunteers.

A 5th August ‘round robin’ advertised some community training workshops and an open evening to visit an excavation. As they were notified very late, and took place on the 6th, they’re not repeated here!

Archaeological news update

With apologies that the webmaster’s absence means some events had already happened.

  • The latest newsletter from member Hayley Roberts at Past Participate is on their website here, with updates on their activities and lots more.
  • A talk on the River Stour’s historic character in the November 2023 newsletter, has a link to the Historic England Research Report it was based on. They had done the slightly earlier research report here on the Stour’s catchment area, looking at archaeological sites identified by aerial images. This may be of interest, although locational information is sometimes wrong.

The latest news

  • The very last news from Chase & Chalke Landscape Partnership, now that the project started in 2019 has ended, is here. It wraps up all that they have done and looks at ensuring the work provides a legacy for the future. There are still volunteering opportunities, including locating archaeological features from their LiDAR records, and there’s a webinar advertised about the Champions of the Past project – on Tuesday 22nd July, 19:30-20:30.
  • ‘Villafest’ at Rockbourne Roman Villa will be on the weekend of 2nd and 3rd August, exploring the archaeology of the villa site from the Iron Age to the Anglo-Saxons with displays, re-enactments and family-friendly activities. There’s more information and a booking link here

CBA Wessex Newsletter and a new Dorset heritage website

  • The July newsletter is here, full of information about summer archaeology-related events, particularly those linked to the Festival of Archaeology.
  • Information from Claire Pinder, Dorset Council archaeologist, about the new Dorset Heritage Explorer website:
  • “If you fancy a bit of indoor archaeology, we’d like your help testing a new website that is being developed to present Historic Environment Record (HER) information. The site can be searched from a map or terms such as monument type or period. We’d like to know how you think the site is shaping up and what additional information and guidance would be useful. More archaeological events in Dorset

  • New walks are being added to Dorset Archaeological Days 2025: ‘Langton Westwood: the landscape of Purbeck quarrying’ Saturday 29 June 10:30, ‘Barrows to Baileys: the landscape of Corfe Village’ Sunday 8 June 10.30 and ‘Historic Wareham’ Saturday 21 June 2pm. Further information and booking on Dorset Council’s Archaeological Events page.
  • On Thursday 3 July, 7:30pm (doors and bar open from 7) at Sydling Village Hall, local amateur historian Anne Brown will be giving a free talk on her research into the deserted medieval village of Elston: Discovering Elston: the story of a Deserted Medieval Village in the Heart of the Sydling Valley. Proceeds of the bar go to Sydling Historical Society (the Sydling Village website is here, with a link to the Historical Society, although this event doesn’t seem to be advertised (yet?)).
  • ‘Archaeology at the Archives’ is a chance to meet archaeologists, see and touch archaeological finds, look at historic documents on early archaeologists in Dorset, meet volunteer groups like Past Participate and join in family activities: Dorset History Centre, Saturday 9 July 10-3. More details are on the Archaeological Events page above under “Family activities, ….”.

  • The May issue of ‘The Hart’ from Cranborne Chase National Landscape arrived very late. It includes information on the Chalke History Festival 26-31 June and a webinar on the Champions of the Past project on 22 July.

  • The CBA Wessex June newsletter has a great deal of information about archaeological events in the region.

Bookings are now open for their summer excavation in the Valley of Stones. There are opportunities to book guided walks and a talk too. Dates are various from the 16th- 27th June. Donations are requested to help with costs – at your discretion from a small amount up to a sum which is less than for many excavations. The latest update from EDAS

  • Dorset History Centre have two new events:  ‘Words Take Wing‘ – an evening of words and music inspired by Thomas Hardy, Wednesday 21st May, 7pm and ‘From the Stacks‘, a recurring free lunchtime lecture on the last Wednesday of the month from 12:30 30th April on selected archival treasures that they hold.   • Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society is offering several of its Roman publications at reduced prices including many on Hadrian’s Wall and 2 reports on excavations in Carlisle. See their publications list here.

  • Past Participate’s Spring newsletter is on their website here, concentrating on their ongoing work in the Valley of the Stones, with news of forthcoming events, including an excavation.
  • Place-based histories are those that focus on understanding the past within a specific geographic location, emphasising local communities, cultural contexts, and the unique stories of a place, rather than broader national or global narratives. ‘Big Dig’ volunteering opportunity, Alice Roberts lecture and a newsletter

  • This year’s ‘Big Dig’ Field School at Winterborne Kingston will take place from Tuesday 3rd June to Friday 4th July. Registration for volunteers to join the excavation is now open on Eventbrite
  • Alice Roberts is touring her latest book later this year, about the rise of Christianity (and the fall of the Roman Empire). She will be at Bournemouth Pavilion on Sunday 16th November at 7:30 and you can find a little more and book tickets  at https://www.bournemouthpavilion.co.uk/events/alice-roberts-2025.  
  • The latest Chase and Chalke Landscape Partnership Scheme news is HERE, including archaeological survey work, a film about the Dorset Cursus and information on the Fovant Badges.

Poole’s role at Dunkirk and a talk in Dorchester

  • From Poole Maritime Trust’s newsletter, there’s an exhibition from 30th April to 27th May at the Lighthouse in Poole on the town’s role in the Dunkirk evacuations 85 years ago. It can be found on their website here

  • The CBA Wessex February newsletter has a number of events and talks at museums, as well as an invitation to an Environmental Archaeology Study Day on Saturday 25th March at Mike Allen’s lab in Codford, Wiltshire. It can be found on their website here
  • ‘Past Participate’ are running a desk mapping project to locate sarsens along the South Dorset Ridgeway, to be competed by 14th February if possible. Training slides are on their website and you can get in touch to get a map area: www.pastparticipate.co.uk/things-to-do
  • The Coach House Inn in Winterbourne Abbas are happy for you to use their car park if you want to visit the Nine Stones site, only avoiding Sunday lunch times (unless you’re eating there!)

The Dorset Proceedings and two paid events in Dorchester

  • As EDAS is a member of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeology Society, we receive the Proceedings each year and offer members access to the latest volume and to our (incomplete) collection of past editions.

CBA Wessex January newsletter

You might be interested in the newsletter at this address , particularly the Ridgeway Project (though not looking at the Ridgeway in Dorset) and the Silchester talks if you fancy a trip to Reading. Mike Fulford is an excellent speaker and, of course, highly knowledgeable after his many years of excavation at Silchester and his publications about it.

Gladiators at Dorset Museum

Dorset Museum, Dorchester, will have a new exhibition on Gladiators of Britain, in conjunction with the British Museum and Colchester & Ipswich Museums, 25th January-11th May 2025. Supporting this is a talk by the historian and author Tom Holland: The Colosseum: Rome’s Arena of Death, Friday 31st January, 6-7pm. Re-runs of ‘Meet the Ancestors’ on BBC4

An old series of Meet the Ancestors, presented by Julian Richards, is being shown on BBC4. A recent edition featured EDAS founding member Martin Green excavating 4 Neolithic burials and the great shaft at Down Farm near Sixpenny Handley. It’s available for a time at BBC Two – Meet the Ancestors, Series 2, The Ultimate Sacrifice and on iPlayer.

Champions of the Past – Archaeological excavation at Bowerchalke 3rd-14th September

Chase and Chalke are working in partnership with the Teffont Archaeology Project to run an excavation at a Roman site in Bowerchalke. Geophysics at the site has revealed a series of stone Roman buildings, which will be the main focus of the excavation. There is also the opportunity to sign up to help process the finds. Red House Museum and Silchester exhibition (till 1st September)

As well as curating the Silchester exhibition, the Red House Museum, originally a Georgian workhouse, is always worth a visit.  Amongst other things it has an excellent section displaying local prehistory, with a fine multi-period selection of worked flints from the Bournemouth area, and particularly from Hengistbury Head. Check their website for opening times (usually closed Monday and Tuesday).
